I was living the dream, working as the web assistant, doing corporate cool stuff. So, when staff started dropping like flies, i didnt really give it much consideration. But i should have.

Slowly, my pay date kept being pushed back. They started paying in cheques. And not always was i able to cash them. Sometimes they bounced. The company started paying 'to cash'. At the time i was naive, and didnt realise that this indicated there wasnt enough money to pay us. People around the area started hesitating to do business with us. But still, i was in my warm fuzzy bubble of corporate bliss.

Then we took over travel land. I personally delivered a $1,000,000 cheque to the bank (unsure if this was the ACTUAL cheque that sealed the deal). It was a glorious moment holding that cheque as the most money i had seen in one place prior to that moment, was a few thousand dollars. Of course Internova couldnt actually afford to buy travel land and subsequently they went bankrupt all over again.

By the end of this saga i was performing 4 roles in one because there was so few staff left. Accounts & debt collecting, front desk & reception, web design assistant & pa to the MD. I was abused constantly by ex travel land staff, and hassled by media agencies. I cant remember what i was thinking at the time, but the best decision i made was to leave, even after being offered a 50c per hour pay rise (i scoff at that amount now but being a tween, it felt like a lot). The good news is that I was obviously level headed enough to realise that the company couldn't pay me the piddly $7.76/hr i was on then, so how could they afford me at 50c more per hour?!

I somehow got thinking about this experience today... so set about a google search. I subsequently turned up this article. It turns out things went pear shaped a lot earlier than i realised.

That experience shaped my future employer choices. And if it wasnt for the few friends i made along the way, i think it would be a memory worth forgetting forever.

The Canberra Country Mile

Since moving to Canberra, i have noticed many things. The cold, the weird left hand turning road rule, the lack of mobile reception, and the vehement battle of North Vs South. One of the most noticeable things however, is the lack of willingness to travel. Because i live more than 3 minutes drive from my place of employment, i live at the end of the earth. The concept of actually having to spend a small amount of time getting places horrifies the die hard Canberra folk. This boggles me. Having lived in the Country for a good portion of my life, it took me 40 minutes just to get to school!

I have been quite vocal with my point of view regarding the Canberra folk and the distance philosophy...
